Sandra, 50 years, Householder for CAYSH for six years
'My son had grown up and left home, and my husband and I had a spare room free. I have always been interested in young people, and wanted to see what I could do to help them further.'
'I had thought about being a householder for several years but it was only when I read an advert in the local paper by CAYSH that I decided to apply. I went through the application process and then started to house a young woman.
My experience in housing the young woman was really positive. It wasn’t always easy, especially the first few months where I felt instinctive maternal feelings but knew that my role was support, not a replacement mother, and this was the best way of helping her. However, we got on really well and I believe that she benefited from me and my husband’s encouragement and support, as well as the secure and friendly environment living with us.
I am very impressed by the scheme that CAYSH provides. I went on several training sessions which CAYSH held, which helped me build my confidence in providing support for the young person.
I am now going to house a young man, which will bring a different experience I am sure, but one I hope to be equally as positive.
I would recommend being a householder to someone who, like me, has a real passionate commitment towards young people. In fact, I have talked about it with my friends and some of them are keen to apply as a householder. It feels good to be able to help a young people build their confidence and self-assurance, and make steps towards independence.’
