CAYSH meets the Homelessness Minister

Minister and a young person

Minister makes time to listen to the experiences of homeless young people

Iain Wright MP, Homelessness Minister, took time out of his ministerial responsibilities to meet with nine young people from CAYSH on Wednesday 25th February 2009.

He took them on a personal tour of the House of Commons, and then spent an hour addressing their questions on issues such as getting into employment after being homeless, accessing benefits and attending college when homeless.

''It really made politics come alive in my eyes, and strengthened my enthusiasm to speak up about any concerns I have’’, said Katie Cabot, a young person previously housed by CAYSH, but who now works for the organisation.

CAYSH helps young people gain the skills to live independently and make positive steps into employment or training. All those who participated in the House of Commons visit greatly appreciated the opportunity to speak up about their personal experiences, and the feeling that getting involved can make a difference.

''It was great to meet such passionate and engaged young people. I was very impressed by CAYSH's attitude of putting young people at the heart of everything they do'', said Iain Wright, MP.

''We are very grateful that young people were given this unique opportunity to voice their issues in the ‘powerhouse’ of decision-making’’, said Kathryn Uche, Head of Services at CAYSH. ''We are firmly committed to young people being involved in decision-making at all levels of the organisation. It’s great that Iain took up the spirit of this mission to meet young people who are affected by his department policies’’.
